1 - 2 Day Construction Site Noise and Vibration Management Workshop

BAA Heathrow Express tunnel piling noise and vibration

The objective is to provide delegates with a clear understanding of what constitutes “best practice” using the most up-to-date techniques (including case studies that illustrate new and innovative techniques). The workshop is designed to be easily customisable for specific requirements. For example, day 1 can be a detailed management briefing for staff (managers and supervisors) who require a pragmatic overview of what constitutes best practice in site management re noise and vibration. Day 2 can be added for staff who need more detailed information and expertise (planning, safety, environmental, measurement). It is also an opportunity to pick the brains of engineers with decades of experience. Bespoke template documentation (e.g. Section 61) can also be provided.

“Lively and entertaining .. confirmed that a lot of misconception with regard to noise and vibration are evident and that pre-planning and discussion are essential...” Roger Martindale, Estimator
“Well presented in a manner which made it interesting and informative...” Philip Chippendale, Piling Manager
“Well presented course ... course notes clear and thorough to follow...” Ian White, Quality Manager
“Good quality information, presented very well... ”Matthew Rastall, Senior Estimator

The workshop can be heavily customised to suit particular industries or sites and can also include practical project work on new or existing plant or sites. This usually requires prior visit(s) in order to acquire the recordings, photos and technical information for inclusion in the course material.

Location: this is usually run in-house - sometimes the host may invite delegates from other organisations to attend.

Course outline: Health, Safety and Environmental engineers or managers in the construction, demolition and infrastructure industries who need to devise and implement effective noise and vibration management programmes to meet Best Practical means (BPM) noise and vibration management requirements to minimise the likelihood of complaints from local residents.

Learning objectives and outcomes:  delegates gain the knowledge and confidence to devise and implement effective noise and vibration management programmes for any site based on current best practice.

Accreditation: INVC attendance certificate
Qualification: 2 or 4 CPD points.
Relevant regulations: BS5228, Section 60, 61, 80 documentation

Quality noise training - in person or online

This noise training course is run face-to-face at a host site. Once a date has been selected, other parties can be invited as appropriate (reducing costs). There is also an online version giving even more flexibility.

Delegates are encouraged to send in advance or bring examples of S61 or other documentation as the basis for practical discussion.

  • Introduction - Human Responses to Noise and Vibration: subjective and objective effects of noise and vibration, effects of frequency content
  • Noise and Vibration Terminology and Basic Calculations: the fundamental noise and vibration terminology and monitoring techniques. Barrier performance, decay with distance, sound power to sound pressure, source addition
  • Standards and Specifications: a brief review of the main construction noise and vibration legislation and standards: Control of Pollution Act. BS5228 parts 1, 2, 2009 for noise and vibration; Section 60, Section 61 and Section 80 with examples.
  • Sound Propagation and Acoustic Materials: behaviour of sound; sound decay with distance, barriers, enclosures, sound absorption; sound insulation
  • Site Noise and Vibration Management Best Practice and Best Practicable Means: public relations and discussions with EHOs; management procedures; monitoring requirements (establishing the minimum number of monitoring stations, generating reports as required by EHOs etc); operational factors; control options with case studies; innovations (acoustic camouflage, psychology)
  • Practical Session: set up, calibration, logging and making use of the data from continuous monitoring systems

The extended version can include:-

  • Advanced Standards and Specifications: Control of pollution Act. BS5228 parts 1, 2, 2009 for noise and vibration
  • Section 60, Section 61 and Section 80: detailed review, legal requirements, practical examples of section 61 applications
  • Noise Calculations: barrier performance, decay with distance, sound power to sound pressure, source addition
  • Defining What Constitutes “Best Practicable Means”: general approach, site specific, available techniques
  • Noise and Vibration Measurement Instrumentation: use and abuse, calibration, options
  • Discussion

Option

  • Practical Measurement Session

None.

While this course is designed for delegates with no background knowledge in site noise and vibration, you are encouraged to forward company documentation in advance as the basis for discussion. You may also find the following tasks helpful.

  • Look at what noise policy or assessments your company already has in place. By doing this, you will start to gain an idea of what improvements need to be implemented once you return to work.
  • If your company has a sound level meter, try to bring it with you. This will: a) enable you to check it is suitable for noise measurements; b) you can use your own meter for any optional practical sessions.
  • If you can acquire a copy of BS5228 and skim read the relevant parts of it, this is useful. In addition, review any company documentation related to site noise and vibration e.g. Section 61 templates.
