About the INVC

Our Approach and Provenance ...
The INVC is an engineering noise and vibration consultancy specialising in developing and implementing "best practice" and highly effective training in the fields of noise and vibration. The "engineering" element is key as it brings a creative pragmatism to our work in fields largely dominated by "people who measure very accurately". Whilst we also provide accurate measurements, our engineering expertise allows us to get our main satisfaction from developing elegant, cost effective solutions to the underlying problems. The success of this approach is best illustrated by our unparalleled reputation as noise consultants and by the following selection of some of the innovations and technical improvements we have developed that are either current best practice or "best-of-breed".

  • Quiet Fan technology: eliminates fan tones at source quickly (minimal down-time), permanently (no maintenance), with no effect on fan efficiency and at a fraction of the cost of conventional silencers.
  • HAV-Base: very low cost virtual HAV assessment using the largest database of accurate field data available.
  • Remote Control of Noise: analysis and diagnostic system allowing us to design detailed noise control measures based on supplied video clips or sound recordings. Fast, low cost and low carbon footprint (no travel).
  • Maths-free Noise Competency Courses: we have devised a way to teach decibels without the usual academic and mathematical complications - no calculators are required on our IOSH courses.
  • Digital Noise Assessment (DNA): benchmark template assessments that reduce noise management costs by an order of magnitude.
  • Combustion Noise Control: unique source noise control techniques that can also improve burner efficiency.
  • ProTest - Production Test System: flexible, automated production line noise and vibration testing at a fraction of the cost of conventional alternatives.
  • Psy-lencer: psychological silencer for environmental noise nuisance applications where noise control is impractical.
  • Noise Nuisance Recorders: developers of the first bespoke noise annoyance recorder.
  • Novel Dynamic Vibration Absorbers - simplified narrow band frequency analyser - noise control KnowledgeBase - Production Line Vibrator designs - Novel Quiet Air Nozzle ....

History and Experience
Since the 1985 buy-out of part of the Lucas Industries noise and vibration facilities, the INVC has provided an expanding range noise and vibration related engineering consultancy services, training and bespoke analysis systems. The sheer range of projects makes for very interesting and challenging work for anyone with an interest in engineering. This heritage combined with cross fertilisation across industries (e.g. chocolate and concrete processing have much in common!) has also generated a constant stream of innovations and case studies for our highly regarded training courses for the major UK training organisations.

  • HSE / EEF Roadshows: invited to provide the practical presentations on risk control for both noise and HAV on the 20 roadshows to launch both sets of regulations across the UK.
  • Noise Competency Courses: developed and run the IOSH occupational and environmental noise competency courses.
  • HAV Competency Course: developed and run the IOSH HAV competency courses.
  • Engineering Noise Control Case Studies: the major provider for the HSE publication, Sound Solutions (plus sequel).
  • Official Launch of New Noise Regulations: provided the noise control presentation for the launch at Earls Court.

The success of our approach has made us the company of choice with respect to our specialities for a diverse range of companies such as Cadbury, GlaxoSmithKline, Nestlé, CMB, CompAir, Coca Cola, BAA, Desoutter and many others.

Qualifications
Most of our noise consultants are degree qualified Mechanical Engineers with a wide range of experience across industries such as aerospace, automotive, gas turbines, marine.... - plus for environmental noise consultancy, we also have an ex L.A. gamekeeper turned poacher (or should that be vice versa?).

Facilities
Per capita, we are probably the best equipped noisde and vibration consultancy in the country. Each engineer has a sophisticated SLM, solid state digital recorder, vibration meter, notebook PC and FFT analyser. This "basic" kit is backed by a raft of more specialised equipment for more esoteric work (and if nothing suitable is available, we design our own).

Interests
Anita, the office manager, is very tolerant, can walk over water (and anyone else who doesn't fill in their forms correctly) and breeds enormous white dogs. The directors, Steve May and Peter Wilson, both drive red cars - the former cycles, the latter runs fitness training sessions. The other two Steves are into the more dangerous activities of rock climbing and caving, whilst there's also a David (pronounced "guru"), a Terry (a pronounced gourmet), a John (maritime past-times), a swedish Toby (extreme hobbies - including marriage) and a Tim (fantastic with a hoover).
